On July 26, 2019, the workshop “Biosafety and Biosecurity in the Era of Synthetic Biology: Meeting the Challenges in China and the U.S.”, co-hosted by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and Tianjin University Centre for Biosafety Research & Strategy, was held at St. Regis Hotel in Washington, D.C. of the United States. The workshop drew over 100 researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders from China, Europe and the United States for a day-long dialogue on biosafety and biosecurity in an era of synthetic biology.

The talks focused on technology progress, as well aslegislation, policy management and education measures to safeguard safe and ethical application of the synthetic biology.
Drs. Liu Conghui of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Wang Fangzhong ofCBRS atTianjin University, as young scholars, were invited toshare their thoughts onfostering the next generation of leaders to promote responsible science.
