Johns Hopkins HealthSecurity Center hosted a trainingprogramentitled “the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Initiative (ELBI) Research and Policy Symposium” in Washington, D.C. from July 23 to 25, 2019. A group of young scholarsfrom Foreign Affairs MinistryofChina, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Tianjin Universitywere invited to participate the program, along with several dozen U.S.young scholars and professionals in the field of biosafety and biosecurity.
Developments in biological technologies have the capability to impact positivelyonbiological practices across several disciplines.However,there arealso serious concernson the possible misuse and abuse of the technologies.Theprogram gaveresearchers and professionals frombothChina and U.S. an opportunity tolearn fromeach other, and theleaders of the field; meanwhile, to explore the possibility of collaborationintheareas of common interest.
Chinese Young scholars from China participated apanel discussion focusing on "Perspectives on Biosafety and Biosecurity in China" onJuly25th.
Prof. Weiwen Zhang, Director of CBRS at Tianjin University, was invited to give a keynote speech on "Risk Management of Synthetic Biology, Recent Efforts of Chinese Scientists".
