The 2
nd workshop on biosafety between Tianjin University (TJU) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) was held on June 28 at the Beiyang campus of Tianjin University.
Invited by Center for Biosafety Research and Strategy at TJU, Dr. Anita Cicero, Dr. Gigi Gronvall and Dr. Caitlin Rivers from the Center for Health Security at JHU, the leading think tank on biosafety research and strategy, visited TJU for the second time this year. The workshop was chaired by Professor Weiwen Zhang, director of the Biosafety Strategy Research Center at Tianjin University. Vice President of Tianjin University Prof. Yingjin Yuan attended the workshop. Faculty from the Department of humanities and social sciences, the School of Chemical Engineering, the School of Law and Center for Biosafety Research and Strategy of TJU also attended the workshop.
Prof. Yingjin Yuan first welcomed Dr. Anita Cicero, Dr. Gigi Gronvall and Dr. Caitlin Rivers for their visit to TJU. Prof. Yuan also expressed the hope that both sides can use this opportunity to develop a strategic plan for future collaboration on biosafety research and education.
Subsequently, Prof. Weiwen Zhang gave a brief presentation on cyanobacteria-based researches in TJU, followed by a presentation on "synthetic yeast chromosomes" by Dr. Yi Wu from Prof. Yuan’s group.
After the presentation, both sides discussed the possible collaboration in areas of research and education, such as joint application of research projects, exchange of visiting scholars and exchange students, etc.
The Center for Health Security of JHU was founded in 1998 by Dr. D.A. Henderson. It is funded by the US government, the US philanthropic department, and some foreign governments to protect the public from epidemics, disasters, and post-disaster reconstruction.
