To further promote strategic discussions and a common understanding of the basics of life sciences research and control, National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and the Medical School (NASEM) of the United States, the Croatian Academy of Sciences, and the International Association of Academy of Sciences (IAP) hosted the workshop on Jun 10-13, 2018 at the Croatian Academy of Sciences headquarters in Zagreb, Croatia. Prof. Weiwen Zhang, director of Center for Biosafety Research and Strategy of Tianjin University, was invited to attend the workshop. Mr. Victor Dzau, president of the National School of Medicine, Mr. Jaksa Barbic, vice president of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Ms. Alemka Markotic, president of the Croatian Society for Biosafety, Peter McGrath, organization coordinator of the International Academy of Sciences, Mr. Piers Millett, co-chair of the iGEM Safety Committee, Mr. Robin Fears, director of the Life Science Research Group of the European Scientific Advisory Committee and experts from several research institutions from many countries such as Malaysia, Germany and Switzerland also attended the workshop.
The plenary and working-group meetings focused on the current state of governance in the field of life science research, including legal and policy measures, the autonomous measures adopted by the scientific community and the education sector. In addition, the meeting also1 discussed the short-, medium-, and long-term goals of dual-use research governance.
